The ambassadors, both professional and non-career, have all been called back by President Bola Tinubu.
This was revealed on Saturday by Amb. Yusuf Tuggar, the minister of foreign affairs, via his media assistant Alkasim Abdulkadir.
To staff the country’s diplomatic missions abroad, the former president Muhammadu Buhari selected 42 career ambassadors and 41 non-career ambassadors in July 2020.
The diplomats were sent out after being confirmed by the Senate in accordance with the 1999 Constitution’s section 171(2)(1c) and subsection 4.
In response to questions regarding the letter requesting the recall of the Nigerian ambassador to the UK, the statement confirming the recall of the ambassadors reads: “Sequel to the inquiries on the letter requesting the recall of the Nigerian ambassador to the UK, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, has clarified that all career ambassadors and non-career ambassadors have been recalled on the instructions of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
“The President is free to send or recall ambassadors from any country as they serve as representatives of the nation at his direction.”
“I have the honor to notify you of Mr. President’s decision to recall you, signaling the end of your tenure as Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Federal Republic of Nigeria to the United Kingdom,” Tuggar wrote in a letter dated August 31, 2023, and addressed to Ishola by the Minister of Foreign Affairs.
By virtue of this message, you are now required to start winding down your affairs, formally resign from your host government within sixty days, and go back to Nigeria by the latest date of October 31, 2023.
“I would like to take this opportunity to thank you on behalf of Mr. President for the service you have provided as Ambassador and Principal Representative of Nigeria in the United Kingdom.
