Dr. Abubakar Mustapha Danraka, a public official, was found guilty of sodomy and given a life sentence by the High Court in Abuja at the request of the National Agency for Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP).
The Federal Capital Territory High Court, sitting in Kubwa, Abuja and presided over by Justice Asmau Akanbi-Yusuf, sentenced Danraka to life in prison for rape (Sodomy) in accordance with Section 1 of the VAPP Act of 2015, according to a statement from the agency’s spokesman, Vincent Adekoye, on Tuesday.
Adekoye disclosed that the defendant, Abubakar Mustapha Danraka, was a former senior special adviser (technical) to the director of the National Institute for Pharmaceutical Research and Development as well as the chief pharmacist of the National Hospital in Abuja.
He said the decision puts an end to the three-year-old controversy surrounding the well-known case, which had garnered a lot of interest from stakeholders around the nation.
Adekoye claimed that the offender was detained on March 27, 2020, for defiling a young person (name withheld), who just so happened to be his neighbor and reside in the same Abuja estate as him.
After luring the victim to his flat and knocking him out with alcohol, he engaged in anal sex with him.
He was charged with a crime by a charge dated August 9, 2021, and on April 5, 2022, during his arraignment, he entered a “not guilty” plea.
The charge was sufficiently established beyond a reasonable doubt by the NAPTIP prosecution team, resulting in the September 18, 2023 ruling.
Professor Fatima Waziri-Azi, Director General of NAPTIP, responded to the verdict by praising the judiciary for its tenacity in seeing that justice is done in accordance with the VAPP Act.
