The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) have urged the general public to reject the Nigerian military’s assertion that its members were in charge of putting an end to the notorious Monday sit-at-home protest.
According to reports, Lt Gen Taoreed Lagbaja, the Chief of Army Staff, said earlier this month that the IPOB-enforced sit-at-home order had been lifted as a consequence of increased efforts by his troops and cooperation with key stakeholders.
In August 2021, IPOB declared a sit-at-home protest to call for the release of its leader, Nnamdi Kanu, who was being held against his will at a Department of State Services (DSS) facility. Later, in response to a persistent outcry from the elders and Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, IPOB called off the sit-at-home protest.
However, in response to the assertion made by the Chief of Army Staff, IPOB said in a statement on Friday that it was untrue.
The public should not believe the declaration made by the Nigerian military that the order to stay at home on Mondays in the South East has been stopped. Simon Ekpa and his crew, who were still participating in the sit-at-home protest, were told to halt it by Nazi Nnamdi Kanu, according to IPOB.
It demanded that the Nigerian security agencies stop claiming that the weekly Monday sit-at-home exercise in the South East had been stopped, noting that their soldiers always hid in their barracks on Mondays throughout the duration of the exercise.
