A'Ibom pastor and his brother will be executed by hanging for murder

A pastor named Uduak Umoren and his brother, Emmanuel, were both given death sentences by an Akwa Ibom State High Court located in the state’s Essien Udim Local Government Area for murdering Iboro Joe and beating him to death over a plot of property.

The victim, a farmer and trader from Ikot Otu, was beaten to death when he went to see his sister-in-law in Adiasim Ikot Ekon to express his condolences for the loss of her husband.

The deceased’s sister-in-law testified to the court that she had invited the second convict’s wife to accompany her to her late husband’s farmland so she could determine how much she might charge for his burial when the second convict’s wife spotted them and informed her husband that someone was attempting to bury a charm on their family land.

She said before the court that the second convict began hitting the deceased as soon as he arrived on the farmland. His wife then brought her son and her brother-in-law, who joined the fight and attacked the deceased with a machete and broken bottles.

The two defendants were found guilty of murder and given death by hanging by Justice Winifred Effiong, the case’s presiding judge, in her Wednesday ruling.

“The state Ministry of Justice’s prosecution team had established its case beyond a reasonable doubt. She concluded that the accused killed the victim on purpose.
