The former Group Managing Director and Executive Vice Chairman of Nigerian Army Properties Limited, Major General Umar Mohammed, was found guilty of 14 of 18 count charges, including stealing and other various offenses that are all against service laws, by a Special Court Martial established by the Nigerian Army.
The allegations made against the General center on, among other things, theft, forgery, conspiracy, theft, and unauthorized diversion of Army property.
General Mohammed was accused of collecting the sum of $1.045,400 paid by shipping firms for the use of the Nigerian Army Jetty at No. 6 Marina, Victoria Island, Lagos, in one of the accusations for which he was found guilty.
He was also found guilty of stealing $430,800 from the Nigerian Army’s domiciliary account at Unity Bank in Abuja, which had been set up for the benefit of the Nigerian Army Jetty, Marina, and Lagos.
The court martial also found him guilty of withdrawing and seizing the N74 million paid for a property owned by the Nigerian Army in Ikoyi, Lagos, out of the N75 million total.
However, the general was cleared of charges that he had sold military property worth N200 million in Lagos and had stolen N750 million from the N2.5 billion acquired from banks and subscribers for an Army housing development in Asokoro, Abuja.
He was also cleared of charges related to fabricating a Deed of Agreement document in order to seize another Army property in Lagos.
The Special Court Martial, which is presided over by Major General Kames Myam and consists of seven other Major Generals, a Brigadier General, and a Judge Advocate, is scheduled to read out the punishments for the defendants on Tuesday of the next week.
Col. BA Oguntayo (Ret.) served as the prosecution’s lead attorney, and Olalekan Ojo, SAN served as the defense’s lead attorney.
Major General UM Mohammed was wheeled into the courtroom during the court-martial; nevertheless, the court’s president, Maj-Gen Myan, stated that the accused had undergone all required medical examinations, all of which had shown that he was healthy enough to face trial.
