In the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, the House of Representatives has asked that everyone who disobeys traffic light signals and other traffic laws be tracked down and prosecuted.
The House urged the Federal Capital Territory Administration to implement tools that would enable it to identify and imprison anyone breaking the FCT’s traffic laws.
It issued specific directives to the Federal Capital Territory and the Federal Road Safety Commission committee to ensure compliance.
Following the passage of a motion by Igariwey Enwo titled “Compelling Road Users to Obey Traffic Light Signals and Road Traffic Regulations in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja” during Thursday’s plenary, these resolutions were passed.
The House was concerned that rather than regulating traffic flow and averting accidents, vehicles in the Federal Capital Territory were posing a risk to other road users by disobeying or failing to heed traffic signs.
The worst violators of traffic control light signals, according to the report, are VIP automobiles, bullion vans, motorcyclists, dispatch riders, tricyclists, and taxi cab vehicles.
The House was startled by data from the National Bureau of Statistics that revealed Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory, suddenly had Nigeria’s highest rate of automobile accidents.
