The University of Ilorin administration has expressed its condolences to the parents, friends, and coworkers of Sanni Hameedat, a deceased student who took her own life after lending N500,000 to a lad she met on the social media app Snapchat.
Hameedat was enrolled in her SIWES program at the time of the event.
In a widely shared WhatsApp message, the management of the private hostel she was staying at before her death, Rubiks, confirmed that the reason for her death was depression brought on by pressure from app agents who demanded immediate repayment and her brother’s inability to support her financially.
“A most horrible way to die, especially for a promising young lady who had every opportunity before her to make it big in life,” was how Akogun put the situation.
He added, “The management will counsel the students of the university to be wary of the company they keep in order to avoid falling into the traps of scammers,” and expressed the university’s sympathy to the parents, siblings, friends, and colleagues of the deceased, praying that God gives them the strength to bear the loss.
