In order to prevent the House of Representatives from purchasing and receiving 360 sports utility vehicles for its members, totaling N57.6 billion, the Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project has petitioned the Federal High Court in Lagos State to halt the proceedings “pending the hearing and determination of the applications for injunction filed by the organization.”
SERAP claims that it filed for a “interim and interlocutory injunction” in response to rumors that the MPs planned to order and receive the SUVs.
The group said that “each of the SUVs would cost taxpayers at least N160 million” based on reports.
“Such further order(s) that the honourable court may deem fit to make in the circumstance of this suit” is another request made by SERAP.
According to SERAP, the Tinubu-led government is required by the United Nations Convention against Corruption and human rights treaties, to which Nigeria is a state party, to preserve the “rule of law and the integrity of the judicial process.”
