The principal and vice principal of Al-Azhar School in Zaria, Kaduna State, have been detained by the Kaduna Police Command on suspicion of using physical punishment on JSS3 student Marwanu Nuhu Sambo.
Sambo was reportedly severely assaulted by the school’s vice principal, principle, and prefects due to his lack of attendance.
The event took place on Friday.
The arrest was verified by a statement issued by PPRO ASP Mansir Hassan of the Police Command.
“Police is fully aware of the incident and we are in control of the situation,” Hassan declared.
Two suspects have been taken into custody in relation to the development, the PPRO reports. The CP has ordered a thorough inquiry into the issue, and we will identify its underlying cause.
It was revealed that Sambo had been given a hundred canings and paraded before the assembly for skipping classes.
According to reports, the student was taken to a Zaria private hospital and later declared dead.
However, the administration of the school clarified in a statement that the officers who administered “the irresponsible punishment did it without consultation” and that the punishment was not in line with its policies.
