The Senate has defended its decision to buy its members 360 sport utility vehicles.

The Red Chamber did not disclose the exact price of each car, but it did state that its members favored foreign SUVs over those made in the country.

Earlier, the Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project sought a Federal High Court in Lagos to restrain the lawmakers from taking delivery of the SUVs awaiting the hearing and resolution of the motions for injunction filed by the group.

The organization filed its motions for an interim and interlocutory injunction in response to rumors that members of the House of Representatives will soon purchase and receive N57.6 billion worth of SUVs. Each of the SUVs would reportedly cost roughly N160 million.

At a press conference on Tuesday, Sunday Karimi, the chairman of the Committee on Senate Services, responded to the development by pointing out that Nigerians were criticizing parliamentarians while ignoring ministers, who were given four official vehicles.
