Abubakar Saminu, a laborer who is accused of stealing a purse from an accident scene, was remanded on Thursday by a Dei-Dei Grade 1 Area Court in Abuja.
Saminu, a resident of Tipper Garage, Byazhin, Abuja, was accused by the police of conspiring and stealing.
But Saminu entered a not-guilty plea.
Until the case was heard on August 29, the defendant was to be confined at the Suleja correctional facility per the judge’s direction, Mr. Saminu Suleiman.Mrs. Juliana Samuel of Kubwa, Abuja, reported the incident to the Kubwa Police Station on July 1, according to the prosecution, Mr. Olanipekun Babajide, who testified in court.
Babajide claimed that the accused, together with three other individuals still at large, plotted to steal Samuel’s handbag from the scene of an accident on the Dantata Bridge on Arab Road, Kubwa.
He testified before the court that Samuel’s phones, valued N68,000, and other valuables were in the handbag.
He informed the court that despite this, the offender was apprehended as he tried to flee.
According to the prosecution, the other people made off with the handbag and everything within.
He claimed that the prisoner confessed to the crimes during police inquiry and questioning.
However, he said that attempts to recover the stolen goods were unsuccessful.
