The commercial boat struck stationary barges in Gelegele, the Ovia South West Local Government of the state on Thursday, resulting in one fatality and four injuries, according to the Edo State Police Command on Monday.
This comes shortly after some locals asserted that the disaster claimed the lives of at least seven people.
According to reports, the boat carrying mostly women and children ran out of gasoline after a passenger got off in one of the riverine communities’ settlements.
It was said that the boat veered off course and struck the barges.
Upon being called, SP Chidi Nwabuzor, the Public Relations Officer for the state police, confirmed the tragedy and stated that one person had perished in it.
Perewari held the oil firm responsible for their failure to supply ambulances for the deceased.
But according to a senior employee of the business who isn’t allowed to comment on the matter, “That day was Ekheuan market day, and our barges and tug boat were anchored at our jetty.” If you have visited our jetty previously, you will notice that there are three barges that are usually there. They were there prior to 1987, and that boat wasn’t the only one to travel through that location on that particular day.
“The police participated in the rescue efforts and are fully aware of all that transpired. The Army speedboat was nearby and observed all that took place.
