A passenger boat sank in heavy currents in the Kebbi state of northwest Nigeria, leaving at least 40 persons missing and assumed dead, a local official said on Tuesday.
Due to poorly maintained waterways, overloaded boats, and insufficient safety, boat accidents are common in Nigeria. This is especially true during the annual rainy season, when rivers and lakes swell and flood.
Bala Mohammed, the district administrator of Yauri, where the tragedy occurred on Monday, said, “We are still looking for 40 passengers with the help of local divers and believe they have drowned.”
Due to the high water level and strong currents brought on by the wet season, the search is challenging.
