Real Madrid welcomed Thibaut Courtois back to training at Valdebebas on Monday afternoon, yet the goalkeeper made sure to clarify that at no point did he suggest that Los Blancos must be named champions for the 2019/20 season.

LaLiga Santander remain hopeful that the competition will be able to resume where it left off before the COVID-19 pandemic took hold in Europe, though no concrete date has been set for a restart.

Courtois had caused a stir by suggesting that it would have been unfair to hand the title to Barcelona, who currently sit atop the standings in Spain’s top flight, if the season were to be cancelled.

“At no point did I say that Real Madrid had to be declared champions,” Courtois confirmed in an interview with Television Espanola.

“If the league ends, we’re in a better position even if we lost to Betis.

“If we play the 11 remaining matches then I am confident that my team can win the league.”

Los Merengues’ squad returned to training on Monday under the guidelines put in place by the Spanish government, and Courtois explained how the session ran.

“We have to wear gloves and a mask, be two metres from each other,” Courtois added.

“It’s individual training and we have to disinfect everything.

“It was strange, different to normal but feeling the grass and being able to train is better than nothing.”
