Medical staff members at the Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospital in Ile-Ife, Osun State, have taken legal action against the management for allegedly forcing them into poverty by withholding their salaries for more than ten months.
One of the workers, Ben, lamented that since he started working for the OAUTH on December 13, 2022, he had not received his income, making it impossible for him to provide for his family.
An additional staff member, who wished to remain anonymous to avoid repercussions, emphasised that unjust policies destroying Nigeria’s health industry and the non-payment of salaries were the main reasons why talented people were leaving the nation.
He begged the appropriate authorities to assist them, noting that all attempts to see that their appeals were heard were fruitless.
In the past, a number of health unions, including JOHESU, have gone on strike in support of the recently hired employees in an attempt to get management to pay salaries. However, these actions have not been successful because the ministry of health has always threatened or forced the employees to return to work.
