Explosion strikes fishing villages in BayelsaJPEG

An explosion at an abandoned oil well at Bendick-Kiri in Okpoama Kingdom, Brass Local Government Area, Bayelsa State, has been reported.

On October 20, 2023, a leak from the oil well’s Christmas tree began to release large amounts of oil and gas compounds into the stream fishing villages’ environment.

According to local reports, the oil well, which belongs to the Nigerian Petroleum Development Company, is situated in OML 66, also known as “Kurogbagba 1” in the records.

Even though it was reported that the oil well had leaked in May of this year, fishermen have since left the affected area.

Speaking at the event on Monday, Tarinyo Akono, a former chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists and the Bayelsa State Council, called the wellhead explosion “intense and extremely dangerous” for both the environment and humans.
