Father Of Siblings Crushed To Death Alleges Intimidation, Demands N30m Compensation

He lamented that the owner of the trailer had not responded to his family’s demand to enable him to bury his two sons.

According to a report by The PUNCH, Mr Gift David, the father of the two kids who were crushed to death by a trailer while returning from school at the Mile One area of Port Harcourt, Rivers State, has spoken up.

The man has now demanded N30m as compensation for the deaths.

He lamented that the owner of the trailer had not responded to his family’s demand to enable him to bury his two sons.

David, who stated these on Tuesday while speaking to journalists, claimed that the owner of the trailer had also refused to meet his family, adding that he instead sent two lawyers.

He said, “When the lawyers came, I let them know that my children were small and that they could no longer be kept in a mortuary.

“I want them to be buried properly and I told them that they should secure a plot of land in order for us to bury the children, and they should compensate the family at the cost of N30m.”

He alleged that the lawyers resorted to intimidation and threat, as he called on the state government to come to his aid.

“I can no longer watch my children kept in the mortuary up till this time; I want them to be given a proper burial. That is why I am calling on the government and the civil society to intervene in this matter. Since this incident happened, I know how I have been feeling.

“I can no longer close my eyes; I even find it hard to enter my house because I was living with them (the deceased). When I enter my house, everywhere is quiet, and I go out. I have been wandering about the street like a mad man.

“That is why I want to see the owner of the trailer. Let me ask him what we did. What made me angry was that the lawyer said as far as he was concerned it was N500,000 that they could give.

“He mentioned several cases that he had won. I am not the kind of person he can intimidate. Let them help me call the owner; the lawyer is threatening me,” David added.

Recall that a fortnight ago, 13-year-old Promise Gift-David and his brother, 12-year-old Godswill Gift-David, while returning from school, were crushed to death by a trailer.

The police subsequently arrested and detained the driver.
