Gabriel Martinelli Set To Be Out For ‘Months’ After Sustaining A Knee Injury In Training

Arsenal have suffered yet another injury setback after Gabriel Martinelli suffered a knee injury in training that is set to rule him out for months.

The Brazilian starlet suffered cartilage damage after clashing with a teammate on Sunday, becoming the fourth Arsenal player to pick up an injury since the Premier League resumed.

Manager Arteta said: ‘We had some really bad news again yesterday. In training in the last action he got hit by another player and he’s damaged his knee. The doctor is assessing the extent of the injury, but it’s not looking good at all. We don’t know (how long he’s going to be out for), but it’s looking like months.’

Arsenal had more promising news on goalkeeper Bernd Leno who escaped cruciate ligament damage against Brighton.

Leno was carried off on a stretcher after being nudged as he collected the ball by Brighton striker Neal Maupay.

Arsenal feared the worst and that Leno would be facing a long spell on the sidelines but received better than expected indications after he saw a specialist and had further scans today.

He is still set to miss the rest of the season though Arsenal hope he will be fit enough to return to training in four to six weeks.

Arteta said: ‘We thought it was going to be a more significant injury. We still don’t know the full extent but we know at least the cruciate ligaments are not damaged.

‘That was the biggest fear at the start. But he was more positive and in less pain, so that’s good news.’

Granit Xhaka, who sprained his ankle against Manchester City, and Sokratis, who has missed Arsenal’s two games since the resumption with a thigh injury, have returned to full training ahead of Thursday’s trip to Southampton.
