In the Gombe State local government area of Akko, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps has apprehended three individuals who were engaged in illicit mining activities.
The State Commandant of the NSCDC, Muhammad Muazu, confirmed this to journalists on Sunday. He said that illegal mining has been a cause for concern in the nation due to its risks and contributions to environmental degradation, soil erosion, deforestation, and water pollution, in addition to other security issues.
He said the arrest made under his order a critical turning point in the conflict since it sends a clear message to state’s illicit miners.
Sanusi Pindiga, the Gombe State Commissioner for Energy and Mineral Resources, also spoke during her speech. She encouraged all miners in the state to appear before the ministry for screening and clearance and announced that all mining operations have been suspended statewide.
