Kano State Governor Abba Yusuf has disagreed with the ruling of the Governorship Election Petition Tribunal that pronounced his opponent the winner and invalidated his election.
Governor Yusuf claimed he was certain the judgment was flawed.
The tribunal ruled Dr. Nasiru Gawuna of the All Progressives Congress (APC) to be the legitimate victor of the March 18 governorship election on Wednesday, September 20, 2023.
In order to overcome Gawuna, who received 890,705 votes, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) proclaimed Yusuf, who ran on the New Nigerian Peoples Party (NNPP) platform, the victor of the election with 1,019,602 votes.
However, the court took 165,663 of Yusuf’s total votes as invalid votes when it made its decision.
The court decided that 165,663 ballots were invalid because they were neither stamped or signed.
Yusuf responded to the decision by calling it “unfair” and “a miscarriage of justice” in his description of the tribunal’s decision.
He claimed that the judgment was filled with flaws and added that it is only a short setback, therefore he won’t let it depress him.
