Greece wildfires 1,200 kids are pulled out of summer camp as the fire gets closer

The nation is currently seeing two different fires as a blistering Mediterranean heatwave grips the region.

1,200 kids were evacuated from their camp in the coastal village of Loutraki, west of Athens, as fires neared.

In the meantime, police detained a guy in Kouvaras, southeast of the city, who they believe started a new fire.

Weather observers report that there are no signs that the severe regional heatwave will abate.

Additionally, the probability of additional fires is still quite high, according to the Greek meteorological office.

Numerous firefighters fought to stop the wildfires from spreading as they were fanned by strong gusts.

Greek media showed the fire destroying multiple homes and automobiles as thick, white smoke ascended from the burning greenery.

Monks were evacuated from a nearby monastery after dense smoke clogged the roads in the village of Kalyvia, close to Kouvaras.

Greece has recently experienced temperatures of at least 40C (104F). In order to safeguard visitors, the Acropolis in Athens, which is the most well-known tourist destination in the nation, was closed on Friday and Saturday during the peak tourist season.

It’s possible that several local heat records will be broken on those days in these places.

Spain and Italy, two neighbors, have also been suffering exceptionally high temperatures.
