The fly-half, 38, was the subject of a misconduct charge because of his attitude toward match officials during Leinster’s Champions Cup final loss to La Rochelle on May 20.
He was injured and missed the championship game, but he did enter the field after the game.
Sexton plans to terminate his career following the World Cup in France.
Following what it called a “thorough fact-finding and careful review” of Sexton’s activities, the Champions Cup organizer European Professional Club Rugby (EPCR) filed misconduct complaints against Sexton and Leinster for failing to exercise reasonable control over their player.
Sexton, who missed the game due to a groin injury, got into a confrontation with South African referee Jaco Peyper and other match officials after Leinster lost the Dublin championship 27-26.
On Thursday, Sexton will appear via video conference call before an impartial disciplinary committee presided over by Christopher Quinlan KC.
Ireland’s first pre-World Cup encounter is on August 5 against Italy. It is followed by matches against England and Samoa.
Sexton’s availability for either the warm-up games or the tournament itself may be impacted by any potential punishment for their opening World Cup fixture against Romania on September 9 in Bordeaux.
