Raphael Varane’s double blunder against Manchester City ensured Real Madrid crashed out in the Round of 16 following a 2-1 defeat at Etihad Stadium.

Manchester City got on a high start after Raphael Varane was robbed off the ball by Gabriel Jesus to square the ball to Raheem Sterling for an easy tap in from a close range in the 9th minute of the clash.

Eden Hazard and Karim Benzema combined well but the Frenchman was unable to beat Emerson for an equalizer.

Benzema got the equalizer following a beautiful header from Benzema in the 28th minute of the match after Rodrigo perfect cross into the box.
The first half ended 1-1.

Real Madrid showed some flashes in the second half as they controlled the opening 10 minutes the game, the visitors kept misplacing passes in dangerous positions but they were able to make up the necessary cover-up each time.

Real Madrid manager Zinedine Zidane made his first substitute with Rodrygo being subbed off for Marco Asensio in the 60th minute.

Varane made another error and was severely pushed for his poor control on the ball as Gabriel Jesus pounced on the loose ball to beat Thibaut Courtois to make it 2-1.

The defeat ensured Zidane suffered his first knockout in the Champions League.
