The Nigeria Police Force has issued a warning to Nigerians about a growing tendency among couples on online dating sites that it called “sextortion,” “cyberbullying,” “character assassination,” and “blackmail.”
The police issued the warning in a statement released by the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, who said that its operatives had detained a 26-year-old woman named Opara Joan Chizaram who had been in a consenting relationship with a man she met through a dating app.
She then secretly took pictures of his home environment while secretly filming him at the private moment, which she later used to blackmail him for money extortion.
The suspect participated in similar behaviors with other people she met through the dating app, suggesting a troubling pattern of behavior, the police claim, adding that it was found during the investigation that this was not an isolated event.
