Night Bus Services To End Across Greater Glasgow

Night bus services to end across Greater Glasgow

Initially, Glasgow claimed that the choice was made because buses frequently ran with as low as 14 passengers per hour.

The late-night services, which were reinstated a year ago, would end on July 31, according to the operator.

11 routes that run throughout the city in the early hours of Saturday and Sunday will be impacted by the change.

From the city center, the services are provided to Glasgow and the nearby communities of Clydebank, Paisley, Newton Mearns, East Kilbride, Hamilton, Motherwell, and Wishaw.

According to Graeme Macfarlan, commercial director for First Bus Scotland, there is “not enough appetite in Glasgow” for services to go into the early hours of the morning based on passenger statistics.

The number of people utilizing the night buses has not increased to the required level to keep these services running past July, despite extensive efforts by First Glasgow and partner organizations, he continued.

“To do so, we would need the number of weekend users to triple over night, which is not practical.

The change, according to the Poverty Alliance, is “totally unjust” and will particularly harm individuals with low incomes.

Ruth Boyle, manager of policy and campaigns, stated: “We are particularly worried about people who work in low-paying occupations and industries like hospitality, cleaning, and security.

“For many people, this might mean the difference between being able to continue working for a living and really being forced to quit because they lack access to a car or are unable to afford the cost of cabs.

We don’t think the choice is good enough since these services should be accountable to the people who depend on them, but instead we see programs being slashed that are a lifeline for those with low incomes.

The council and First Bus were encouraged by the Night Time Industries Association (NTIA) Scotland to reassess this stance immediately.

A spokeswoman stated, “We already face difficulties with the city’s inadequate transportation infrastructure after 23:00.

“Removing the night bus service in Glasgow is irresponsible, risky, and shows little regard for the safety of thousands of passengers and night workers returning home in the wee hours of the morning.

“The local government spearheads initiatives in many cities around the world to subsidize late-night transportation services and to support an industry that is currently suffering greatly due to the current trading environment.”

“We would ask Glasgow City Council and First Bus to urgently review this position.”
