According to the Nigeria Union of Pensioners (NUP), many pensioners who had rendered honorable service to the nation had passed away without enjoying the rewards of their labor. They pleaded with the federal government to compensate the employees of Nigeria Airways for the unpaid debt of N33 billion.
The elderly have requested that they be included in the distribution of palliatives to lessen the impact of the elimination of the gasoline subsidy.
Comrade Godwin Abumisi, national president of the union, made the request during the 2023 Pensioners’ Day celebration at the union’s Abuja headquarters.
Abumisi praised Muhammadu Buhari, the outgoing president, for having authorized the release and payment of the sum of N45 billion out of the total N78 billion.
“The non-release of the funds for the settlement of the accrued rights is causing a great deal of delay in the payment of monthly pension to this category of pensioners who cannot access their monthly payment and other entitlements without the payment of the accrued rights,” he claimed. The total amount of accrued rights as of the present is around N140 billion.
“We hereby request prompt action from the Federal Government to prevent the souls of this group of retirees from an untimely death.
He highlighted that the Union had called for the harmonization of pensions, which had long been a hardship.
He continued, “We also aim to use the opportunity to highlight the present, unresolved issues that affect all of our members, pleading for answers, including, but not limited to, the following: Pension Non-Harmonization: The pension non-harmonization had persisted for far too long.
“The Union had made multiple attempts to accomplish this, but none of them had produced the intended outcome. The Committee established to work on the harmonization has completed its task and presented a report to the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, nevertheless, and I’m delighted to report that to you.
