PDP and military spar over kidnapping of party chair

The Plateau State branch of the Peoples Democratic Party has charged that Mr. Dung Tari, the chairman of the Jos South Local Government Area, was kidnapped by the military.

Chris Hassan, the State Chairman of the PDP, stated during a news conference in Jos on Thursday that Tari was kidnapped by unknown military people at approximately 1pm following a meeting with members of his Executive Committee at the party’s Secretariat located in the Bukuru area of Jos South LGA.

Hassan described how the LGA chairman was kidnapped, saying, “He (Tari) collected his niece on his way to address a family business after the meeting at the LGA party office Bukuru.

“Until this time of the press conference, we have not heard from him or his abductors nor his family is informed of his whereabouts and the reason for his abduction,” Hassan said, adding that the event occurred on September 23, 2023.

The state PDP chair announced that action had been taken to report the incident to several state security agencies so that an investigation into the whereabouts of the kidnapped LGA chairman could begin.

He claimed that the commando-style kidnapping of Tari was creating tension in the state and could jeopardize the tenuous calm that was in place.

Hassan appealed to the National Security Adviser, the Inspector General of Police, the Chief of Army Staff, and the Director General of the DSS to use their good offices and intervene in the matter to guarantee the LGA chairman’s immediate release. Hassan promised to provide sureties who will produce the LGA chairman upon demand.

However, in response, Captain Oya James, the spokesman for the military unit tasked with upholding peace in the Plateau, cleared members of the Nigerian military of any role in Tari’s kidnapping.

James added, “I have received several calls over the accusations by the PDP and I have also made calls and found out that nothing like that happened.” James went on to challenge the PDP to provide evidence to support their claims.
