Police in AKwa Ibom kill a farmer and give the family N1.3 million in compensation

The family of Umog Charlie, a farmer who was allegedly murdered in Akwa Ibom State by police inspector Oliver Akang, has pleaded for justice.

The family also claimed that the command had made them a settlement offer of N1.3 million to put the matter to rest.

The family claims that Umog was assassinated in Uyo, the state capital, on Asutan Street, off Barracks Road.

A round from Akang’s weapon struck Umog before the villagers’ warnings to the policeman about the pointless shooting were heeded, according to Esther Ini and Destiny Ini, Umog’s sister and brother.

As they noticed that the dead was survived by his wife, Edidiong Ini, and four children, they revealed that the officers fled the scene after Umog was shot.

The account of the relatives was supported by a copy of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the deceased’s family and the Akwa Ibom Commissioner of Police, Olatoye Durosinmi, dated September 26, 2023, and signed by the deceased’s wife, Edidiong, and the deceased’s siblings, Destiny and Glory Ini.

The deceased’s wife’s attorney, Nango Nango, told our correspondent that after receiving the petition, the CP and the police officers instead contacted the families of the deceased and did not inform him of the events that led to the signing of the MoU and the offer and acceptance of the N1.2 million by the family and the police.
