According to the Lagos State Police Command, they dispersed mourners who had congregated at the Lekki Toll Gate to pay their respects to the late musician Ilerioluwa Aloba, commonly known as Mohbad, in order to prevent a repeat of the EndSARS saga.
This was said in a statement released on Friday on the verified page of the Lagos State Police X (formerly Twitter) page and signed by Benjamin Hundeyin, Public Relations Officer for the Lagos Police.
The statement claims that there was an agreement between the police and the march organizers not to utilize the Lekki Toll Gate as a meeting place, which was followed throughout the parade but was afterwards broken by some people who gathered there.
In order to protect people and property in the vicinity, Hundeyin said that the police were compelled to use tear gas to disperse the sympathizers who had congregated at the Lekki Toll Gate after their efforts to persuade them failed.
The police spokesperson added that the command would not put up with any individual or group trying to use Mohbad’s passing as an excuse to disturb the peace in the state. She also promised to provide regular updates on the investigation that is being conducted to determine what exactly caused Mohbad to die.
