Senate investigations N11.35 trillion spent on refinery rehabilitation

An ad hoc committee appointed by the Senate will look into all contracts granted for the renovation of state-owned refineries, which are reported to have consumed N11.35 trillion over the course of 13 years.

The panel was also directed to question the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission, Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation Limited, the Ministry of Petroleum Resources, and the Bureau of Public Enterprises about the most effective way to commercialize state-owned refineries.

As he presided over the plenary, Deputy Senate President Jibrin Barau (APC, Kano) appointed Senator Isah Jibrin Echocho as the committee’s chairman.

The chairs of the committees on finance, appropriations, public accounts, and petroleum resources (downstream, upstream, and gas) are among the other members.

It is anticipated that they will turn in their report in four weeks.

During Tuesday’s plenary, Senator Sunday Karimi (APC, Kogi) made a motion that was followed by the resolutions.

Despite numerous Turn Around Maintenance contracts that had consumed enormous sums of money, Nigeria’s four refineries—Kaduna, Warri, and Port Harcourt—had been in a state of moribund state for years.
