A member of the Sokoto State Community Guard Corps accidentally shot himself dead shortly after participating in a joint operation that rescued 66 kidnap victims from Tidibali Forest in the eastern part of Sokoto State.
The operation, led by the Nigerian Army and supported by local guards, took place on Monday, January 6, 2025, in the eastern part of the state.
The Special Adviser to Governor Ahmed Aliyu on Security, Colonel Ahmed Usman (rtd), who confirmed the incident said the operative died as a result of accidental discharge upon returning to base after the operation.
“He was handling his weapon when it accidentally discharged, fatally injuring him. Unfortunately, he passed away shortly after,” Usman said.
He highlighted the ongoing success of the state-sponsored operations aimed at eradicating banditry and restoring peace in Sokoto.
“So far, 66 kidnapped individuals have been freed, and several bandits neutralized in the ongoing efforts. This operation is continuous, as we remain committed to eliminating criminal elements and making the state safe for all,” Usman added.
Earlier reports indicated that the rescued victims were brought to Isa town in the Isa Local Government Area, where they were reunited with their families.
The Sokoto State Government has pledged to continue supporting security personnel in their mission to end banditry in the region.
