The conditional payment of delayed salary by FG is rejected by academic technologists.

The Federal Government’s requirements for the payment of withheld salaries of academic and non-academic staff members of the nation’s tertiary institutions were rejected by the National Association of Academic Technologists on Thursday.

In compliance with the Memorandum of Understanding reached with Organized Labor, which asked the government to release the withheld salaries of tertiary institution academic and non-academic unions for the duration of their 2022 strike, President Bola Tinubu approved a partial waiver allowing tertiary staff members to receive four of the eight months’ salaries that the government withheld due to its “No Work, No Pay” policy.

The federal ministries of education and labor and employment must first draft a memorandum of understanding before the withheld salaries may be paid, the government added, adding that the waiver was given based on the principles of the presidential prerogative of pity.

However, the union claimed that it thought the FG’s requirement was harsh and that it violated workers’ fundamental human rights to freedom of expression and association, which are protected by the 1999 Constitution, in a statement signed by NAAT President Ibeji Nwokoma.
