TOPIC: ESCAPE FROM GOD’S ANGER
TEXT: 1 KINGS 15:25-34
1) THE KEY VERSE:
“Because of the sins of Jeroboam which he sinned, and which he made Israel sin, by his provocation wherewith he provoked the LORD God of Israel to anger” (1 Kings 15:30)
2) THE TEXT:
(1 KINGS 15: 25 – 34 KJV)
“25. And Nadab the son of Jeroboam began to reign over Israel in the second year of Asa king of Judah, and reigned over Israel two years.
26. And he did evil in the sight of the LORD, and walked in the way of his father, and in his sin wherewith he made Israel to sin.
27. And Baasha the son of Ahijah, of the house of Issachar, conspired against him; and Baasha smote him at Gibbethon, which belonged to the Philistines; for Nadab and all Israel laid siege to Gibbethon.
28. Even in the third year of Asa king of Judah did Baasha slay him, and reigned in his stead.
29. And it came to pass, when he reigned, that he smote all the house of Jeroboam; he left not to Jeroboam any that breathed, until he had destroyed him, according unto the saying of the LORD, which he spake by his servant Ahijah the Shilonite:
30. Because of the sins of Jeroboam which he sinned, and which he made Israel sin, by his provocation wherewith he provoked the LORD God of Israel to anger.
31. Now the rest of the acts of Nadab, and all that he did, are they not written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Israel?
32. And there was war between Asa and Baasha king of Israel all their days.
33. In the third year of Asa king of Judah began Baasha the son of Ahijah to reign over all Israel in Tirzah, twenty and four years.
34. And he did evil in the sight of the LORD, and walked in the way of Jeroboam, and in his sin wherewith he made Israel to sin.”
3) THE MESSAGE:
i) God is the almighty Creator, loving Father and merciful Redeemer; but He is also the all-knowing Judge and a consuming fire (Hebrews 12:23,29).
ii) He watches our thoughts, words and actions to see if they conform to His precepts of righteousness.
iii) Anyone who disregards His commandments and warnings faces His judgment.
iv) In the text, Nadab’s reign was like his father’s (Jeroboam) who made Israel to sin and provoked God to anger with the sins of idolatry and disobedience. God’s judgment came upon him and he was destroyed with every member of his family according to the word of the Lord.
v) Several other instances abound in the Scripture of God’s judgment.
a) The first man and woman were judged for their disobedience.
b) Cain was judged for his wickedness.
c) All the people in the time of Noah who refused to repent perished;
d) the people of Sodom and Gomorrah were also judged.
e) Egypt experienced divine judgment when she refused to release Israel from captivity.
f) Even the children of Israel were not spared when they sinned in the wilderness.
vi) Indeed, “it is a fearful thing to fall into the6 hands of the Iiving God” (Hebrews 10:31).
vii) God’s judgment is jcertain. He is merciful to those who humble themselves before Him, but dreadful in judgment to those who despise the riches of His grace.
viii) Be wise and escape His anger. This entails that backsliders and sinners confess and forsake their sins, accept Christ as Lord and Saviour, exercise faith in His atoning blood and live a consistent Christian life.
ix) There is severe consequences for those who wander in sin.
4) THOUGHT FOR THE DAY:
A presumptuous attitude towards God is a deadly opiate for sinners.
5) BIBLE READING IN ONE YEAR:
2 CHRONICLES 28;
2 KINGS 16-17
