Togolese national Michael Agbalo, 35, was detained by the Edo State Police Command for reportedly killing Maharazu Umar due to a conflict at work.
The defendant allegedly hired Umar to help him with construction work, but once the job was over, there was a misunderstanding, leading to the victim’s death.
According to Chidi Nwanbuzor, the state command’s spokeswoman, Clement Obagbikoko reported the incident to the Etete Police Division in Benin.
Obagbikoko said that after hiring the suspect to perform construction work on his property, the latter brought the victim along to help.
When queried about Umar’s whereabouts when they were done, he said he had departed. However, at around 7 o’clock that evening, when Clement’s wife was reviewing the work, she discovered Umar’s body inside the compound.
“We called the suspect immediately to come to the house and he was arrested,” he continued.
The PPRO reported that the suspect had admitted to hitting the victim with a hammer before he fell and died, and that the body had been left at the hospital.
He declared that a court charge would be filed soon.
The suspect said in a press conference that he hired Umar to help him with his work but ended up killing him due to a misunderstanding.
