Striker Vincent Aboubakar broke a 14-year-old record held by Samuel Eto’o as Cameroon progressed to the quarter-final stage of the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations after a 2-1 victory over Comoros on Monday night.

The 30-year-old’s most recent goal, a close-range strike past the makeshift Comoros goalkeeper that further extended his lead as the competition’s top scorer, took his tally to six in this edition of the tournament.

Preceding Aboubakar’s immense output at AFCON 2021, Eto’o was the record holder for the most goals scored by a Cameroonian at a single Africa Cup of Nations, having struck five times in Ghana back in 2008.

With Aboubakar having now netted a resounding six times, he has surpassed Eto’o to become the country’s new record holder, according to GCB Online

Eto’o, however, still holds the record for the top scorer in AFCON history, with the retired forward having amassed an impressive 18 goals in the tournament overall.

Aboubakar will now look to emulate the feats achieved by Egypt’s Hossam Hassan and South Africa’s Benni McCarthy at AFCON 1998 by becoming the first player since to net seven goals in a single campaign.
