Compared to the £2 million won by Cameron Smith last year, the prize for the winner has increased by more than £300,000.
The total budget, which was £11.2m last year, has increased to £12.7m.
“Our goal is to ensure The Open remains at the pinnacle of world golf, and we have almost doubled the prize fund since 2016,” R&A chief executive officer Mark Slumbers stated.
The Open for this year will be held at Royal Liverpool in Hoylake from July 20–23.
After Southport’s Royal Birkdale Golf Course was selected as the 2026 venue, the oldest major in sports will return to Merseyside in three years.
“While we are seeing substantial increases in prize money across the men’s professional game,” Slumbers continued, “we are fulfilling our wider obligation to the sport by elevating the AIG Women’s Open.”
The prize pool at the 2022 Women’s Open increased by 125% from 2018 to £5.6 million, with Ashleigh Buhai taking home little under £850,000.
